Has your garage door froze shut? The coldest months are here and that means you’re probably using your garage door more frequent. Without a doubt, as the temperatures drop there is a chance a garage door may freeze shut. In the meantime, your car could be trapped inside and could unexpectedly need a garage door repair. Why My Garage Door Froze Shut?

1. Check the Weather Seal

The strip of rubber also known as the weather seal runs along the bottom of the garage door. Basically, if the weather seal is old, ripped or cracked, the cold air can enter your garage. To be sure this does not happen, thoroughly look over your weather seal during the winter months. Overall, if you see any damage, contact Sterling Door before the problem gets worse.

2. Clear the Area Around Your Garage Door

Michigan weather is very unpredictable. In other words, one day it can be 50 degrees and sunny, the next day it’s single digits with snow and ice on the ground. In order for a garage door to open, it’s important to realize general maintenance can make a difference. Give yourself a little extra time to clear the area around the door rather than rushing. Also, wash the outside of the door frequently to remove salt and debris.

3. Install a Heater

If all else fails, you can always install a heater inside the garage. This is a more costly option, but it will definitely help your door from freezing shut. On the positive side, you could start using your garage for storage space or a new exercise room.
