For many homeowners a garage door is the main entrance in and out of your home. Because the garage door gets used often, it’s important to keep all the moving parts lubricated. When doing so, less stress is placed on the garage door parts. Lubricate the moving parts at least two times per year. This will keep the door running smoothly.

What Garage Door Parts Should I Lubricate?

Each garage door has hinges. Hinges are crucial components to hold the panels together. They allow for the door to open and close. As you slowly raise the garage door manually, you want to lubricate each hinge. This is done at the point where it meets the bend along the track.

Rollers connect each side of the garage door to the tracks. They help glide the door along the tracks when the panel goes up and down. If the rollers aren’t lubricated regularly, you may notice the door moving slowly or jerking while it moves. Overtime the jerking can damage the garage door opener.

Where to lubricate these garage door parts depends on what types of rollers the door has. Uncovered steel rollers usually only need a dab of grease on the ball bearings. Black nylon rollers don’t have any ball bearings, so usually a small dab on the area between the rollers and shaft.

Garage door springs are mounted on the side or above the garage door. They become tighter as the door is lowered. Next, they uncoil to release tension and raise the panel. To prevent a broken garage door, lubricate the springs. Lubricating the springs reduces friction and helps avoid rust and corrosion.
