choosing an insulated door

Insulated garage doors help maintain the temperature inside a garage. In other words, insulation can help control your home’s overall temperature and reduce energy consumption. The type of insulation and the R-Value indicates how well the the space is insulated. Due to the frigid winters, Michigan is a state where an insulated door can be very beneficial.

Choosing an insulated door can help protect your vehicle and other belongings in your garage. Insulation is especially important if you use your garage for a workspace or if you have a living area above or near the garage. Another benefit of an insulated door is it can reduce noise. In other words, an insulated door is typically quieter than a non-insulated door.

Here are three things to consider when choosing an insulated door.

1. Insulation Rating

The R-Value is the most essential factor when choosing an insulated garage door because it indicates how effectively an indoor space is insulated. The R-Value measures the thermal resistance, which reveals how well it resists conductive heat flow to prevent temperature differences. The R-Value of a garage door depends on the material, density and thickness. The R-Value of a garage door usually ranges somewhere between 6.3 to 20.4. To make a decision on what R-Value is right for your garage door, you want to consider your home’s construction. If you have an attached garage, a higher R-Value helps your home stay warmer and protects your home from extreme cold temperatures.

2. Insulation Material

A garage door’s material is the main factor in determining the R-Value. The two most common grades of insulation are polystyrene and polyurethane. Polystyrene insulation comes in the form of rigid panels that fit in between the garage door’s steel panels or inside a single-layer door. This type of insulation provides greater energy efficiency and quieter operation than a non-insulated door, but has a lower R-Value than a polyurethane insulated door. Polyurethane is an insulating foam that offers the greatest insulation and energy efficiency. This type of insulation is injected between the garage door’s steel layers. Then the foam expands to fill all the door’s crevices and mold to its frame. This strengths the door, prevents dents and can be more vibration-resistant.

3. Right Style and Brand
