Rust doesn’t only look bad, but can be a serious problem for your garage door. Some garage doors are made to be resistant against rust, but some still show it. If you own an older garage door, it is very likely that rust will eventually show up. Rust on a garage door is common at the bottom on a garage door because it’s the area of the door where snow, road salt and rain gather. It’s recommended to handle rust on your garage door immediately. If not, it could begin to spread and create holes on your garage door.
Here are some step you can take to ensure rust doesn’t show up on your garage door.
1. Remove Rust
Rust on your garage door can be treated with a cloth soaked in white vinegar. Vinegar works because it causes rust to dissolve. Then, you will scrub the rust on door by using a steel-wood pad. Make sure you scrub all the rust. If any rust is left behind, it could keep spreading.
2. Fill in the Holes on the Door
Some garage doors may have holes on them and those should be filled in. You should use a bonding agent that is suitable for metal (or appropriate for the type of door you have). As soon as it is dry, you could use some fine-grit paper to get the spot sanded. Next, you should sand the entire garage door. Lastly, use a dust cloth or a brush to remove any dust.
3. Wash Your Garage Door
Rust on your garage door can leave it looking not so pretty. Before you considering painting your door, you need to wash it thoroughly. Paint typically will not stick well to dirty and greasy surfaces. Painting over pieces of debris isn’t a good idea because the surface of the door will have bumps on it. In order to wash your garage door, you should use dish soap and warm water. After you wash it, rinse it with a hose and give it time to dry.
4. Get Your Door Painted
Finally, you will want to prime and paint your garage door. It is recommended to use a primer and paint that are resistant to rust. They should also be made to be used on metal surfaces. If you have any questions on what products to use, please call Sterling Door at 586-412-5600.
