What is a Garage Door Remote?

How to program your garage door opener to your remote is a simple process. First, what is a remote and why do we use it? A garage door remote is a handheld device that opens and closes your garage door from the outside. They are usually stored in the car, so you can easily press the button when you arrive at your home. Remotes have one to three buttons depending on the type of remote is needed to work with your garage door opener. It’s a great device to have quick and easy entry access for your home.

Garage Door Remote Safety

Garage door remotes can get lost or stolen out of vehicles. It’s important to hide the garage door remote in the vehicle or bring it inside with you. This will minimize visibility from any thieves that may be looking for a way into your garage or home. Overall, how to program your garage door remote is quite simple.

Here are a few easy steps:

  1. Carefully place a ladder underneath the opener and remove the light cover.
  2. Locate the LEARN button on the back of the opener. It is usually a circle or square button. The color of the LEARN button may vary depending on brand, model and age of the opener.
  3. Press the LEARN button until the LED light comes on.
  4. Hold the remote 3 feet away from the garage door opener.
  5. Press/Hold the button to the remote (sometimes you may need to press the button on the remote 3 times, thus depending on age and model of opener)
  6. Once the remote is programmed you will hear two clicks.
  7. If multiple remotes, repeat steps 1 through 6.
