winter garage door problems

The worst time for garage door problems is during the cold weather. Freezing temperatures along with snow can prevent a garage door from opening and closing.  If you have winter garage door problems, it can become frustrating.

Here are some garage door problems that can occur with during the winter months.

1. Garage Door Won’t Open

It’s very common for a garage door spring wire to snap because they can weaken by the colder weather. If your garage door will not open manually or if it feels unusually heavy, you most likely have a broken garage door spring. An easy way to recognize a broken spring is by looking up and seeing if the coil is split into two pieces. Another clear sign is if you hear a loud burst noise when you open or close the door. If you have a broken spring, you should always call an expert to fix it because if try to do it yourself, you can get seriously injured.

2. Garage Door Frozen Shut

During colder temperatures, it can be common for a garage door to be frozen shut. This happens because weather seal sits in water or snow then the temperature drops and they freeze. If you find your garage door is frozen to the ground, give Sterling Door a call at 586-412-5600 to help you out.

3. Garage Door Doesn’t Open All the Way

Lastly, the most common cause for a garage door not to open or get stuck at a certain point can be a lubricant issue. Lubricant can become hard and sticky in the winter. To avoid this from happening, we don’t recommend using WD-40 on your garage door. There are several lubricants meant specifically to lube garage doors.
